Flat World Ranking:
In Uganda approximately 50% do not read or write. The majority of coffee farmers are rural-based and live below the poverty line.Such people lack what it takes to cross national borders to engage in credible trade due to language barriers, knowledge and skill deficiencies. They have therefore not benefited from globalization by way of human capital movements.

According to Thomas Friedmans' Globalization levels, Uganda is ranked as a 1.0. Uganda interacts globally at the country vs. country level.
The Human Development Index:
(HDI)- A tool developed by the United Nations to measure and rank countries' levels of social and economic development based on four criteria: Life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling, expected years of schooling and gross national income per capita. The HDI makes it possible to track changes in development levels over time and to compare development levels in different countries.
According to the 2001 HDI, Uganda was ranked 0.422, number 141 out of 162 countries, placing it among the most under-developed and poverty-stricken countries in the world.
